DIY Personalized Tie-Dye Pool Towels

The perfect time to tackle this project is right now—just before the summer heat really hits! While we might not live near the ocean, a custom towel is a must-have for those long afternoons spent at the local pool or in the backyard under the sprinkler.

Supplies Needed

• White Cotton Towels: Fluffy bath or beach towels work best for soaking up the dye.

• Spray Tie-Dye Kit: These are widely available and great for even coverage.

• Duct Tape or Painter’s Tape: Used to mask off names or designs.

• Protective Gear: Rubber gloves and a plastic tablecloth or a grassy area.

• Warm Water: For mixing your dyes.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Set Up Your Workspace Find a flat area outdoors, preferably on the grass, or cover a table with a plastic drop cloth. Lay your white towel out completely flat, smoothing out any wrinkles.

2. Mask Your Design Decide on the name or word you want on your towel (like “EVERLY”). Using strips of duct tape, carefully spell out the letters in the center of the towel. Press the edges of the tape down firmly to ensure no dye seeps underneath—this is called “resist” dyeing!

3. Prepare Your Colors Mix your spray dyes with warm water according to the kit instructions. This is a great time to look at a color wheel. Plan to apply your colors in rainbow order (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet) so that where the colors overlap, they blend into beautiful secondary tones.

4. Start Spraying Put on your gloves and begin spraying the dye over the towel. You can spray right over the tape! Encourage kids to experiment with “pigment strength”—spraying more dye for a deep, vibrant look or a light mist for a pastel effect.

5. Flip and Finish Once the front is covered, let it sit for a few minutes, then carefully flip the towel over to spray the back. This ensures the color is saturated all the way through the fabric.

6. Dry and Reveal Let the towel dry completely before peeling away the tape to reveal the crisp white letters underneath. To set the dye, wash the towel by itself (without any other clothes) for the first two cycles.
